B2B Garden Brewery hopes to become the gathering place for folk musicians in the community.

The brewery, located near Comanche and Wyoming NE, has started a trio of monthly activities centered on folk music.

Operations manager Alicia Stelzer said she attended the Albuquerque Folk Festival last fall and became interested in the folk music scene. The brewery wants to become a go-to venue for live music so she reached out to local musicians involved with the annual festival.

“You don’t see a lot of places that play folk music here,” she said. “We wanted to be that kind of place.”

On the second Sunday of each month, FolkMADS (Folk Music and Dance Society) will hold a jam session from 4 to 6 p.m. The fourth Sunday of each month will be the Albuquerque Folk Festival jam session. Anyone of any musical ability can come play with other musicians from 4 to 6 p.m.

Finally, two Fridays a month, B2B plans to book a folk band.

She said the festivities will take place at B2B indefinitely.

Bill Balassi, co-director of the Albuquerque Folk Festival, said he’s hoping the events will help foster a new generation of musicians.

“We want to get younger people out here,” he said. “Many of us with the folk festival are getting grey. That’s why it’s nice doing the Friday thing.”

The folk festival is held every October at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and run completely by volunteers. Balassi said they host between 65 to 100 workshops. They encourage attendees to participate in community outreach throughout the year and the B2B sessions give them that chance.

Stelzer said the sessions may shift and attendees should check the brewery calendar before attending.

The musicians will gather underneath the portico in the brewery’s enclosed backyard, which has grass and trees.

“It’s a wonderful place,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to do three seasons of jamming outside.”

The first meeting in March was a hit and they had several participants for the community jam session Balassi said.

“We want to establish B2B as a place to go to hear music,” Balassi said. “We want to make sure they thrive so we have a place to go at anytime. Any week you go, there will be some music.”

B2B Garden Brewery is located at 8338 Comanche Road NE. They serve tacos, beer, ciders and cocktails. Visit b2babq.com/gardenbrewery for more information or call 505-407-2046.
