Lobos’ Bowerman to help coach US track and field team

Laura Bowerman, a University of New Mexico associate head coach, has been named to the USA Track & Field women’s coaching staff for the World Athletics Championships, July 15-29 in Eugene, Oregon, USATF announced Wednesday.

This is the first time the event is coming to the U.S., at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field, and Bowerman is excited to be a part of the action.

“I am so grateful to have been nominated and approved to serve in this role (Women’s Assistant Coach – Distance),” Bowerman said, in part, in a text. “… To serve the athletes and Team USA is a special opportunity. I cannot thank all those in this amazing sport enough for contributing to this journey, particularly the coaches and athletes whom I’ve been surrounded with. We are excited to see the remainder of the team selected in June.”

Bowerman, 35, who joined the Lobos in October of 2015, was part of the selection process months ago, UNM coach Joe Franklin said. Franklin said he was excited when he found out the news that Bowerman would be a coach on the USATF staff.

“It’s not only a big deal for her, but it’s a big deal for UNM and the state of New Mexico,” Franklin said. “The next step could be becoming the coach of the Olympic team. It’s an honor for UNM to have Laura on staff. That experience is going to be unbelievable for her.”

Bowerman, who ran at Florida State and later UNM, will coach the USA distance runners. When she returned to UNM, she made an immediate impact with the women’s cross-country team as the Lobos won the NCAA national title in 2015 and 2017. She also has helped lead the UNM women’s cross-country team to seven straight Mountain West titles, extending their streak to 14 in a row.

At UNM, she has also been a part of developing 22 All-American honors and two individual NCAA Champions on the women’s team.

For track, she has helped coach the women’s squad to 43 All-American honors both indoor and outdoor.

In outdoor track, two of her student-athletes won their respective events at the NCAA Championships, including Courtney Frerichs in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2016 and Weini Kelati in the 10K run in 2019.

Franklin expects that Bowerman will be gone from UNM for most of the month of July, but that’s OK.

“The nice thing about Laura, and one of the things that makes her a great coach, is that she is super accessible,” Franklin said. “We won’t miss a beat. She works her tail off.”
