Spring sports: Aggies-Lobos baseball to pit two teams coming off rough weekend

RENO, Nev. – Justin Olson homered twice and drove in three runs, but New Mexico fell 13-4 to Nevada Sunday in the rubber game of the three-game Mountain West Conference baseball set at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.

The Lobos came into the weekend ranked 280th of 293 NCAA Division I teams in earned run average, a whopping 8.32. That number will go up, since all but three of the 41 runs Nevada scored this weekend were earned. Justin Still (1-2) took the loss as the starter and first of five Lobo pitchers, allowing five earned runs (eight overall) on 10 hits in three innings. Nevada (25-21, 15-9) outhit UNM 15-5.

New Mexico (18-28, 9-18) is in sixth place in the seven-team league with only three league games to play, and only the top four teams will qualify for the postseason league tournament. In fourth place and needing just one more league win to clinch its spot is Fresno State (24-24, 12-12).

The Lobos return home to host New Mexico State on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Santa Ana Star Field.

UNM won the first two games between the in-state rivals 19-2 and 7-4. The Aggies also come to Albuquerque on May 17 for one more game.

• Meanwhile in Riverside, California, the Aggies had an even rougher weekend than did the Lobos.

On Sunday, NMSU fell 12-6 in Western Athletic Conference play to Cal Baptist. The Aggies (18-26, 8-16) lost all three games in the series.

The top three in Cal Baptist’s lineup – David Martin, Harrison Spohn and Chad Castillo, combined to drive in nine runs.

New Mexico State capitalized on a CBU error to plate three unearned runs in the top of the first, but it was all the home team from there.

Kyle Westfall had two of the Aggies’ seven hits, and Logan Gallina hit a solo home run.

Cal Baptist (29-15, 15-9) outscored New Mexico State 29-8 in the series.

SOFTBALL: In Boise, Idaho, UNM fell 7-2 to Boise State, which swept the three-game set. The loss dropped the Lobos (25-25, 5-16) to last in the nine-team MWC.

The Lobos outhit the Broncos (37-10, 16-5) 7-6 but stranded eight baserunners. UNM’s two runs came in a game-tying bases-loaded two-run single by leadoff hitter Ashley Archuleta.

Andrea Howard then came up and flew out to center. She went 0-for-3 and her average dipped to .401. Emma Guindon (12-10) took the loss, allowing five runs in three innings.

UNM wraps up its regular season with games Thursday-Saturday at home vs. conference opponent San Diego State.
