ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The teenage parents of a 3-month-old child have been indicted by a grand jury on charges of intentional child abuse for severe injuries suffered by their young son, Las Cruces police said in a news release.
Clarissa Gonzalez, 16, and Golden Brown, 17, are facing one count each of intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, conspiracy to commit child abuse and tampering with evidence, the release said.
Detectives learned that the couple took their 3-month-old son on Aug. 3 to Memorial Medical Center where emergency room doctors found the child suffering from severe trauma to his leg and head, according to police. The child was taken to University Medical Center of El Paso for more intensive care.
Medical professionals said the child’s injuries were consistent with child abuse, and detectives who interviewed the couple said their statements were inconsistent, police said.
The teens were arrested on Aug. 3, and Brown, who attempted to flee from the hospital before being apprehended, was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he was being held on warrants from El Paso.
Gonzalez was released from custody without bond, police said.
The 3-month-old boy remains hospitalized and is recovering from his injuries.
