Gov. Martinez in Florida for one-day manufacturing summit

Gov. Susana Martinez is in Florida today to take part in the U.S. Manufacturing Summit, an event hosted by Wal-Mart and the National Retail Federation that is expected to draw about 1,500 people.

The first-term Republican governor traveled to Orlando, Fla., yesterday afternoon. She is one of eight governors attending the event, with Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Rick Scott of Florida among the other chief executives.

At today’s summit, Martinez will take part in a panel discussion with the governors of Arkansas and Mississippi about the importance of U.S. manufacturing for states, according to an event schedule. The president and CEO of Sam’s Club is also slated to take part in the panel discussion.

During her remarks, the governor will tout New Mexico’s export growth and the state’s ideal location for commerce with Latin America, the governor’s spokesman Enrique Knell said.

Martinez is expected to return to New Mexico tomorrow. The governor is not doing any political fundraising on the trip and her travel costs are being covered by the state, Knell said.
