Conrad Keely is multitasking as he’s getting ready for tour.

While it can feel like a whirlwind, he does have one policy.

“I don’t get excited at all,” he says. “I don’t let my emotions take over.”

It’s been that way since Keely began the rock band …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead in 1994.

The current tour will make a stop at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Insideout in Downtown Albuquerque.

The band is touring in support of its current album, “XI: Bleed Here Now,” which was released earlier this year.

It’s the band’s 11th full-length studio album, their first in quadraphonic surround sound and it features a number of special guests including Tosca String Quartet, Amanda Palmer and Britt Daniel from Spoon.

Keely says the album came pretty quickly for the band.

“The last one (2020’s ‘X: The Godless Void and Other Stories’) was done off and on for nine months,” he says. “This one came together as soon as we planned it. It was about a three-month process.”

Keely credits the quickness to execute the album to the fact that the band had a clear idea of what they wanted to do before recording.

“By the time we got recording, it was a matter of filling in the blanks,” he says.

Of course, with any project there are challenges.

Keely says they were more on the personal side.

“We thought about how much time we wasted time ordering food,” he says. “We decided we should just make food every night. I’m really good at smoking meat. I do enjoy eating it as well.”

Back on the music front, Keely says that only two songs didn’t make the record.

“We had tons of instrumental interludes,” he says. “I could make an album worth of the interludes.”

After more than 20 years as a band and 11 albums, Keely says the main goal the band is to remain having fun.

“We’ve done albums where the process wasn’t fun,” he says. “We also don’t want to repeat anything we’ve done before. What made it fun is that we have new talent in the band and the lineup has grown a bit. It’s allowing us to play songs that we’ve never played before. That’s kind of fun.”
