RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Former city councilor Mike Williams announced in a news release today that he is interested in becoming Rio Rancho’s next mayor.
Williams is the first to publicly announce his intention to be a mayoral candidate in the March 2014 municipal election.
Tom Swisstack, who has been the city’s mayor since March 2008, said he has not decided whether he will run again.
Williams was city councilor for District 1 in southern Rio Rancho from 2000 to 2012 when he lost a reelection bid to Councilor Chuck Wilkins.
Williams also served as deputy mayor and was interim mayor in late 2007 and early 2008, after the resignation of former mayor Kevin Jackson.
“I don’t think there is anybody out there that can beat my experience and qualifications,” Williams said.
If elected, Williams said he would focus on getting the governing body to work better together for the good of Rio Rancho.
Outside of his political life, Williams served as a law enforcement officer, retiring in 2005 from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department.
