ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo County commissioners agreed tonight to accept introduction of a proposal to ban picketing that targets someone’s home.
The measure was accepted on a 4-1 vote — Wayne Johnson in opposition — and will come back for final approval in October.
Johnson raised First Amendment concerns about the measure and said threats or trespassing can be handled under existing laws.
Commissioner Debbie O’Malley and other supporters said the goal was to protect the sanctity of the home, without interfering with people’s right to otherwise protest. She and Maggie Hart Stebbins co-sponsored the measure.
I’ll have more in tomorrow’s paper. I covered the proposal in more detail here.
