Two people from Silver City died in a head-on collision Friday after their car, being driven by a 15-year-old male, crossed the center lane of State Road 26 and hit another vehicle, a New Mexico State Police news release says.
State Police officers were dispatched to SR 26 northeast of Deming at about 3 p.m. for a crash involving a Toyota Tacoma and a Dodge pickup that was towing a camper.
“The initial investigation indicated that the Toyota driven by a 15-year-old-male was traveling east on SR 26,” the release states. “For reasons still under investigation the Toyota crossed the center line into the opposing lane of travel and struck the westbound Dodge head-on.”
Martyn Pearson, 38, and Alexandra Olsen, 40, who were passengers in the Toyota, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator, according to the release.
The driver of the Toyota, as well as the 70-year-old driver and sole occupant of the Dodge, were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the release says, adding that alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
