SANTA FE, N.M. — Former state Democratic Party chairman Javier Gonzales, who has long dallied with running for office again since serving on the Santa Fe County Commission from 1995 to 2002, is running for mayor of Santa Fe.
Gonzales, who held an announcement event this morning at a local restaurant, joins a crowded field that includes four sitting city councilors and two other candidates. The election takes place in March.
Gonzales, who is divorced, made news last week when he issued a blog post in which he came out as gay.
Gonzales will immediately take over as one of the presumed frontrunners in the mayoral race, with likely support from unions and many Democratic Party activists.
