Come to think of it, did it ever really end?
The college basketball season isn’t far away and the annual preview magazines are about to hit news stands. At least one of them — Lindy’s Sports College Basketball magazine — will feature Lobo senior and 2013 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Kendall Williams on the cover of one of its regional magazines and has some good things to say about the season ahead for the team.
(NOTE: In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that for many years before working at the Journal I was a freelance writer and copy editor for the Lindy’s college football annual previews. I never worked on this basketball magazine, but have worked in the past with the company.)
The magazine, wisely, has differing covers for different regions of the country and Williams adorns the cover of one magazine along with BYU’s Tyler Haws, Arizona State’s Jahii Carson and Arizona’s Brandon Ashley.
The magazine’s “on sale date” is Sept. 10. Lobo fans, or members of the Kendall Williams fan club, can order copies now by CLICKING HERE.
While I won’t divulge all the content on the Mountain West Conference and the Lobos from the magazine, the good folks over at Lindy’s did give me a sneak peak at some content that I wanted to share.
From a national standpoint, it appears the magazine is in a wait and see mode with the Lobos. Considering the loss to Harvard, the loss of an NBA first round draft pick and the swap of a six-year head coach coach to a first time head coach, it’s hard to argue with some skepticism.
Lindy’s has UNM ranked No. 30 in the nation to open the season.
The pick is a little peculiar in this regard: Lindy’s seems to love the Lobos in just about every other way.
The magazine picks the Lobos to repeat as Mountain West Conference regular season champions and hands out the following individual honors:
- • Mountain West Player of the Year
- • No. 3 point guard nationally
- • No. 2 center nationally
- • No. 6 power forward nationally
- • No. 12 junior college transfer nationally*
- • No. 60 junior college transfer nationally*
*Junior college rankings in Lindy’s are compiled by JucoRecruiting.com‘s Brad Winton.
Here is the Mountain West’s predicted order of finish:
- 1. New Mexico
- 2. UNLV
- 3. Boise State
- 4. San Diego State
- 5. Utah State
- 6. Wyoming
- 7. Fresno State
- 8. Nevada
- 9. Colorado State
- 10. Air Force
- 11. San Jose State
There will be plenty more to come in the next month from all the preseason magazines and there is plenty more from Lindy’s on the Lobos and the league when it hits the shelves.
