Patients undergoing rehabilitation at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center now have a new tool to help return them to an everyday activity: a training vehicle unveiled Wednesday at the Santa Fe hospital.

The St. Vincent Hospital Foundation and Santa Fe Community College teamed up on the rehabilitation services vehicle project, which began after discussions with former foundation vice president and chief development officer Javier Gonzales more than a year and a half ago, according to an event news release.

Christus St. Vincent President and CEO Lillian Montoya, right, and Delfin Martinez put a “Javier” plate on the vehicle in remembrance of the late Santa Fe County commissioner and Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales, who played a large role in getting the rehabilitation services vehicle, a modified Mazda 3, in place. “At that time, the rehab department needed a vehicle to practice car transfers, as well as other functional activities to provide safe transfer for patients to their home environment,” the college said in the release.

The college’s Automotive Technologies department got involved, retrofitting a “car trainer” that could be used by patients.

Gonzales, who also served as a Santa Fe County commissioner and mayor of Santa Fe, died of cancer in early 2022, and “Javier” appears on the license place of the rehabilitation vehicle.
