As Carl and Lita Blake escaped from Europe in 1938, they couple never knew that they would be part of history.
The couple kept documents of their journey which will be displayed at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque.
The JCC has teamed up with the New Mexico Holocaust Museum to present “Lita: A Survivor’s Life in Images.”
According to Judith Stauber, director of museum exhibits, programs and development at the New Mexico Holocaust Museum, the exhibit tells the story of the Blakes – a Viennese family that fled Adolf Hitler to Brazil, New York, and finally, Santa Fe.
Stauber says the exhibit tells the hidden stories of Lita Blake through photos and a multimedia presentation by Lena and Michael Keslin of Santa Fe.
The exhibit opened on Jan. 15, and runs through Feb. 15, at the JCC, 5520 Wyoming Blvd. NE.
“The exhibit was inspired by the photo albums of Carl and Lita Blake donated to the museum, along with documents detailing their escape from Europe in 1938 by their daughter, the late Yara Pitchford before her death in 2021,” Stauber says. “Lena Keslin enlarged the photos and imagined Lita’s response to each of them inspired by her many conversations over the years with Lita until her death at 104 in 2007.”
There will be an opening reception and discussion by artists and museum staff at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at the JCC.

The exhibit is in conjunction with International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
