From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, there will be a whole day of events, including live music, skiing and, of course, a cake. Retro gear is encouraged.

The Placitas Community Library is hosting “Placitas Skies: A Cosmic Experience” from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.
All day, astronomer Tony Hull will teach you how to track to the sun’s shadow using a gnomon. At 11 a.m. Explora will present “Exploring the Universe,” and at 1 p.m. The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS) will set up telescopes for safe viewing of the sun.
After the sun has departed the festivities, the members of TAAS will put on a Star Party at 6 p.m. with multiple telescopes set up for night viewing.

The Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque has teamed up with the New Mexico Holocaust Museum to present “Lita: A Survivor’s Life in Images.”
The exhibit, which runs through Feb. 15, tells the story of a Viennese family that fled Adolf Hitler and finally landed in Santa Fe.
There will be an opening reception and discussion by artists and museum staff at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at the JCC, 5520 Wyoming Blvd. NE. RSVP to attend this free event at nmholocaustmuseum.org/lita-reception.

Local band, Radio Free ABQ, will be making their Downtown debut at Echoes at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. The group, which performed their first show together earlier in January, describes themselves as “indie Americana without borders.”

It’s time for a matanza!
On Saturday, Jan. 28, teams will compete in carne adovada, red chile, chicharrónes, liver and Iron Pig categories at Belen’s Eagle Park. Additional events include tortilla, biscochito and salsa competitions. There will also be live music, a beer garden and vendors.
The matanza will take place at 305 Eagle Park Lane in Belen with free parking in designated areas on Church and Tenth streets.
Tickets are $20, with ages 10 and under free, and include all day food tasting. Drinks to wash down the deliciousness sold separately. Tickets are sold at the gate, which is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit hispanochambervc.org for more info.
