This month, communities celebrated the Lunar New Year with colorful festivals and elaborate performances in Albuquerque.
This year is the year of the cat for Vietnam, while for China it is the year of the rabbit.
There are different theories as to why the two countries recognize different animals, but both celebrate the Lunar New Year based on the Chinese lunisolar calendar, which relies on the orbits of the moon and the Earth, according to NPR.
The Holy Ghost Catholic School held a ceremony with live music for the Vietnamese New Year on Jan. 15, while at the Chinese Cultural Center on Jan. 22, martial artists and dragons entertained the crowd for this year’s celebrations in Albuquerque.
