Fire crews to start pile burns on the east side of Sandias

The U.S. Forest Service will be conducting prescribed pile burns over the next week in the area around Sulphur Canyon in the Sandia Mountains.

Bernalillo County Fire Rescue spokesman Robert Argüelles said around 100 acres worth of piles will be torched between Monday and Saturday, Feb. 4. He said the schedule will be “depending on conditions favorable for the activity.”

The pile burn area is located in the East Mountains, north of Interstate 40, west of N.M. 14 and south of N.M. 536.

“Smoke may be visible from Albuquerque, Tijeras and Edgewood,”Argüelles said.
