Albuquerque police on Friday said they have identified and are searching for a suspect in a road rage incident near the University of New Mexico campus after a photo of him wearing Cookies brand gear went viral.
In a news release, the department said it has issued a warrant for Andres Lorenzo Martinez, 18, on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
According to the release, an alert was sent out from UNM regarding an attempted carjacking, which was later was determined to be a road rage incident by APD’s Investigative Enhancement Division. After the incident, Martinez allegedly struck a 55-year-old man with a firearm.
A photo that police said was taken at some point during the altercation shows the suspect standing in the road near the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and University Boulevard, reaching for what appears to be a firearm in his waistband. The photo was shared publicly and assisted the department in identifying Martinez, the release said.
A search of New Mexico court records returned no history of criminal charges against Martinez.
APD urged anyone with information on Martinez’s location to call 242-COPS or Metro Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP.
