How much pizza can you eat in 10 minutes?

What if there was a $1,000 cash prize on the line?

The Albuquerque-based Pizza 9 chain is hosting its fifth-annual New Mexico Pizza Eating Contest at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at its original location, 5305 Gibson SE.

The man or woman who scarfs down the most cheese pizza wins $1,000. The runner-up gets $500, and third place is worth $250.

Registration costs $15 through tonight. Day-of entries cost $25.

Pizza 9 Marketing Manager Sarah Ortiz said last year’s contest drew about 80 competitors. The record consumption is a stomach-stretching 1¾ pies.

The contest is part of Pizza 9’s fifth anniversary celebration, Ortiz said, and there will be other free activities for kids starting at noon. Representatives from local police, fire and ambulance agencies are also competing in a separate eating contest for charity.

To pre-register for Saturday’s contest, visit any Pizza 9 location in person today. Those willing to pay with a credit card also can pre-register by phone by calling 366-6463 through tonight.

Day-of registration closes at 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

There are 13 Pizza 9 locations around Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas and Santa Fe.

Ortiz said the company plans to open its 14th store this fall near the intersection of Coors and Interstate 40.
