“I figured it was time to step back and deal with other aspects of my life,” he said in an interview Thursday night. “… Part of it really had to do with giving other people opportunities … and giving them a chance to try and take us to the next level.”

Swisstack was elected in 2008 to serve out the last two years of former Rio Rancho Mayor Kevin Jackson’s term. The Democrat was re-elected in 2010 by a wide margin.

On Thursday, Swisstack said he feels he played a large role in giving Rio Rancho an identity as a family- and business-friendly city, in addition to getting Rio Rancho residents to buy into his vision of the city and its future.

He pointed to several national magazines that have recently named the city as a top destination for raising a family and children and for starting a business.

Swisstack said he began a career in public service more than 22 years ago, though he doesn’t consider his announcement a winding down of his political career.

Swisstack did not identify anyone he’d like to see as his successor.
