Burnett denies leaking wiretap to cartel

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Retired educator Danny Burnett denied telling then-Columbus Police Chief Angelo Vega that he was the target of a federal gun-running investigation.
Burnett, who is married to Assistant U.S. Attorney Paula Burnett, testified at the end of his 3 1/2 day trial that he never discussed the wiretap with Vega, whom he once mentored.
Burnett is charged in federal court with leaking information about a wiretaps used to investigate officials from the Village of Columbus who were buying guns on behalf of the Juarez Cartel.
Closing arguments are expected to begin this afternoon and the case should go to the jury late today.
Vega, who according to one witness was being paid $2,000 a month plus bonuses by the cartel, testified against Burnett on Wednesday.
