Rey’s Place moves Downtown

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Michael Rey and his wife Luz Molinar have joined forces on the food front.

Rey last weekend closed his own small Mexican restaurant, Rey’s Place, at 6004 Edith NE, and transferred the operation to Molinar’s larger Downtown restaurant, La Familiar.

They’ve relaunched their joint effort as Rey’s Place & La Familiar New Mexican Food Restaurant.

Yes, it’s a long name. Rey knows it. But he said it reflects the fact that customers will get a taste of both places when they come through the doors at 1611 4th NW.

“We want to keep her customers. … We also want the customers who migrate from Rey’s Place to be satisfied as well,” Rey said, noting that the new menu represents both places.

It’s primarily Mexican and New Mexican food, although there are also some burgers and a club sandwich on the menu.

Rey said the combo restaurant trims overhead for the couple and also will give him a chance to try something new. His previous location was too close to a school to serve alcohol, but he is now applying for a beer and wine license at the 4th Street spot.

Rey’s Place & La Familiar New Mexican Food Restaurant is open 6 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.

The phone number is 242-9661.
