ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Wastewater utility rates in Deming will be increasing 43 percent over the next three years, The Deming Headlight reported.
The newspaper said the increase was approved by city councilors during a special meeting Friday.
The base wastewater charge for residences will increase to $8 in July, $9 in 2012 and $10 in 2013, The Headlight reported. The base rates for commercial billing will increase to $10 in July, then to $11 in 2012 and $12 in 2013.
The rate increase is needed, according to city officials, because liners at ponds at the city wastewater treatment plant are going to have to be replaced, the newspaper reported.
The Headlight reported that Richard McInturff, city administrator, said the cost to replace the liners is estimated at about $3 million.
