Pet owners and their four-legged companions will have a chance to dress up and strut their stuff Saturday to benefit Animal Humane New Mexico.
Shops in the plaza beside the Flying Star Cafe on Rio Grande, just north of Griegos, are collaborating to sponsor a pet parade and adoption event.
Prizes will be given for funniest costume, best fashion statement and best owner-dog costume, said Laura Kuechenmeister, events and marketing coordinator for the independent bookstore Bookworks.
|Pet Parade and Pet Adoption Event
WHEN: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; parade is at 1 p.m.
WHERE: Rio Grande Shops at Flying Star Plaza, 4022 Rio Grande NW just north of Griegos
WHAT: Animal Humane mobile pet adoption, children’s story time, clown, slam poetry, live music by Felix y Los Gatos.
HOW MUCH: Parade entry fee: $5, registration begins at 12:15 p.m.
For anyone who doesn’t have a pet but would like one, Animal Humane will be available onsite for pet adoptions between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Stores in the Plaza, Willow, Pfeifer Studio, Lilly Barrack, Pennysmiths Paper and Bookworks, will donate 10 percent of the proceeds from anything sold between noon and 4 p.m. to Animal Humane. In addition, it will be the last day of Flying Star’s “Buy a cookie, save a pet” program.
During April, the local restaurant chain has been donating proceeds from cookies bearing an Animal Humane logo to benefit animals in need.
Entertainment includes children’s story time, face painting and live music by Felix y Los Gatos.
Event activities will be immediately in front of the stores, and in the plaza parking lot. More parking will be available nearby, Kuechenmeister said.
