Son will be charged in I-40 Fatality

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A passenger who died in a two-vehicle crash just after noon near I-40 and Atrisco Vista Wednesday has been identified as Frank Apachee Sr.
Apachee was in the back seat of a truck being driven by his son, Frank Apachee Jr, Bernalillo Sheriffs spokesman Sgt. Aaron Williamson said in an email.
Apachee Jr. was driving in a truck west on I-40 and exited the freeway at Atrisco Vista, but failed to stop at a stop sign at the end of the off ramp, Williamson said.
Apachee was struck by a black Mitsubishi SUV traveling south on Atrisco Vista.
Apachee Sr. was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mitsubishi and two passengers were taken to University Hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries.
Apachee Jr. was also taken to hospital for evaluation and when released will be booked into Metropolitan Detention Center and charged with vehicular homicide, Williamson said.
An investigation is continuing but preliminary findings indicate alcohol was involved, he said.
Atrisco Vista is closed in both directions over I-40 and the westbound off-ramp there has been closed because of a fatal crash involving a truck and a car.

According to Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies, witnesses say a white truck traveling west on I-40 failed to stop at the end of the off ramp and was struck by a car traveling south on Atrisco Vista, causing the truck to roll over.

A passenger in the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and two passengers in the car were transported with non life-threatening injuries.
