Driver rams patrol cars, flees

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police identified the driver arrested this morning as William Martinez, 31. He faces two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and aggravated fleeing.

Martinez told officers that he is a convicted felon, and one of  the officers who attempted to wake Martinez at the original call at Smith’s reported seeing  appeared to be a handgun in the suspect’s waistband.

Police say Martinez has been arrested multiple times for crimes involving larceny, narcotics and reckless driving.


Albuquerque police have arrested a man they say rammed two police cars with his vehicle near San Pedro and Lomas at about 10 o’clock this morning.

A police spokeswoman reported that officers responded to a “down and out” call at the Smith’s grocery store at San Pedro and Lomas. When the officers arrived and checked on the man, who appeared to be asleep in a white Mitsubishi, he woke up, rammed their patrol cars, nearly struck the officers and other pedestrians in the parking lot and drove away.

APD’s air unit was able to follow the fleeing driver, who stopped near Comanche and Carlisle, where he was taken into custody.

The man’s name and the charges he may face were not immediately available.
