Cops arrest man in ramming incident

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police have arrested a 31-year-old man who is accused of ramming two police cars with his vehicle near San Pedro and Lomas on Tuesday morning.

Police identified the driver as William Martinez, 31. He faces two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and aggravated fleeing.

Officers were responding to a “down and out” call at the Smith’s grocery store at San Pedro and Lomas when they found a man who appeared to be asleep in a white Mitsubishi. When he woke up, he rammed their patrol cars, nearly struck the officers and other pedestrians in the parking lot and drove away, a police spokeswoman said.

The police department’s air unit was able to follow the fleeing driver, who stopped near Comanche and Carlisle, where he was taken into custody.

Police said Martinez has been arrested multiple times for crimes involving larceny, narcotics and reckless driving.
