The Eddy County sheriff is hoping to make the case for more space for his department.
Sheriff Ernie Mendoza is scheduled to appear before the County Commission Tuesday and pitch plans for a new building.
Eddy County Commissioner Guy Lutman toured the current facility and told the Carlsbad Current-Argus the sheriff’s office definitely needs more room.
Lutman said a new facility for the sheriff’s department makes sense, providing room for expansion for the next 25 years. Lutman said Lea County’s new sheriff’s department is an ideal “footprint” for Eddy County to follow.
Eddy County Chief Deputy Kent Waller said if the current commission turns down a new building, the department will continue doing the best it can with the space it has.
That’s currently in the basement of a courthouse.
