Singer/storyteller Snider ready to make a new music

SANTA FE, N.M. — Todd Snider is ready to make new music. He’s just taking his time.

“When it comes to me, that’s when I’ll get started,” he says during a recent interview. “It’s something that I don’t force.”

While Snider may be ready to make new music, his last album, “Agnostic Hymns and Stoner Fables” is just over a year old.

“It still feels new to me,” he says. “But I’m not the type to sit still for too long. I always try and say what’s on my mind and that’s what the last album showed.”

Snider says when it comes down to music, he likes to play the role of storyteller. On his last album, he tackled family values, God, capitalism and righteousness. But it’s also something he has been able to capture in more than a dozen records that he’s released.

“It’s really about the story,” he says. “It’s about getting across what I want to say while telling a compelling story that will draw the audience in. That’s what the goal is every time that I get on stage.”

On his last album Snider says he wrote the song “Brenda” about his favorite music couple – Keith Richards and Mick Jagger.

“I admire that relationship a lot,” he says. “What Mick and Keith have is real, and it can’t be touched and it can’t be beat. I’ve never met them, but I believe in the Rolling Stones. That’s who I think about at Christmas, anymore. They opened their hearts and gave us so much. And they tried to be true to each other.”

Snider plans to make more of a “mess” when it comes to his next album.

He says there will be more collaborations with producers and writing partners.

“It’s always nice to see what comes of putting people together to make music,” he says. “I like to call it a mess because nothing is ever really planned.”
