More closures for Paseo

If you thought the lane closures were aggravating this week at the Paseo del Norte-Interstate 25 interchange, just wait until next week.

Drivers can expect more lane closures, including an eastbound lane of Paseo over I-25, on Monday morning as part of the $93 million project to rebuild the interchange, the New Mexico Department of Transportation said.

The agency urged commuters to use caution and allow extra time to reach destinations.map template

The changes announced Friday include:

  • Closure of one eastbound lane of Paseo del Norte, reducing Paseo from three lanes to two on the bridge over I-25. That closure will extend from the southbound I-25 frontage road east to the entrance of the Lowe’s and Target stores.
  • Closure of the far right lane of the northbound I-25 frontage road from the entrance to Ashley’s Furniture north nearly to Paseo del Norte.
  • Closure of one lane of the southbound I-25 frontage road from Coronado Village south to Paseo del Norte.

Store entrances will remain open despite the lane closures, the agency said.

Drivers can also expect intermittent one-lane closures on the southbound I-25 frontage road from Paseo del Norte south to Jefferson.

Another announced change will affect motorists on southbound I-25 only at night, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Workers on Monday night will close the far right lane of southbound I-25, narrowing the southbound interstate from three lanes to two, from the I-25 southbound off-ramp to the southbound on-ramp.

The I-25 lane closure is expected to remain in effect only for two or three nights next week, the agency said.

Construction on the interchange began in earnest last Tuesday when a variety of lane restrictions began.

The closures have resulted in long delays, particularly for afternoon commuters turning west on Paseo, with traffic backing up on northbound I-25.

Traffic alerts from the Department of Transportation reported at least three traffic accidents Thursday and Friday on northbound I-25 and the northbound frontage road, causing more lane closures and delays.

An accident about 5 p.m. Friday closed one lane of the frontage road south of Paseo.

“Just be careful. Be alert and take your time,” said Daren DeAguero, spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department. Drivers caught in stop-and-go traffic need to avoid the temptation to take their eyes off the road, he said.

“Avoid answering your phones or doing other things while you are driving,” DeAguero said.

Closures imposed Tuesday will remain in effect next week. The continuing closures are:

  • The far left lane of the northbound I-25 off ramp at Paseo.
  • The outside lane of westbound Paseo from just east of I-25 west to the railroad tracks.
  • Jefferson is reduced to one lane in each direction just north of Paseo.
