This 1921 photo shows the coke processing plant at Phelps Dodge Corp.’s Dawson coal mines in Colfax County. The once bustling “company town” is now a ghost town, with only a few walls and a cemetery marking where it once stood. This morning at the Raton Museum, miners’ descendents, historians and New Mexico’s Italian and Greek communities will commemorate the Oct. 22, 1913, explosion at the Stag Canyon No. 2 mine that claimed the lives of 263 miners.
