Nibbles: Shanghai Garden

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For a small place, this restaurant serving Chinese and Japanese dishes has a gigantic buffet selection. Its luncheon all-you-can-eat buffet has more than 30 entrées, not counting four choices of soup and five kinds of sushi plus a wide selection of fresh fruit and cakes for dessert.

Gourmand that I sometimes am, I opted for the buffet ($6.95 for adults, less for children) over a menu item.

I tried a little of this and a little of that. On the first trip, I stabbed a spring roll, some grilled spinach, a fish roll, sliced tempura zucchini and a forkful of veggie lo mein. On the second trip I went for a cheese-covered potato, green beans, dim sum, sushi and mushroom chicken, which is one of four types of chicken offered.

On a third trip — yes, a third — I went for more green beans, more tempura zucchini and a cheese-covered mussel. Overall, I think the vegetarian dishes were my favorites.
