One Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting in NE ABQ

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The man shot by police this morning has been identified as 22-year-old Alan Gomez, according to APD spokeswoman Trish Hoffman.

Police Chief Ray Schultz said during a news conference about two hours ago that the an APD K-9 unit officer shot a possibly-armed man in the doorway of a home on the 2800 block of Madison NE where he was holding two people against their will.

Neither the victim nor the officer have been identified yet.

The chief said people who knew the victim said he had struggled with “mental health issues.”

Schultz said police received a 911 call at 3:14 a.m. from a woman inside the home who told dispatchers she and another man were being held against their will by a Hispanic man in his 20s who was armed with “either a long-barreled pistol or a sawed-off rifle.”

Officers arrived at the scene and began to establish a perimeter, the chief told reporters. The SWAT team was en route to the residence when the suspect began to walk out the front door and back inside.

“At one point, the make exited the house and was challenged by an officer: he was told to come out and show his hands,” Schultz said. “He was holding an object, which is still unknown at this time until we get inside the house to do a warrant. As he turned to go back inside the house — due to the fact that we did still have people inside being held against their will — an officer fired his department-issued rifle one time, striking the male one time.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear which part of his body the bullet struck, Schultz said.

The two people who had been inside were unharmed, the chief said.

Neighbors and the two people who had been inside the home told police that the man had fired several shots outside the front door prior to officers arriving at the home, Schultz said.

Police had been called to the home previously, but he did not know whether the calls had anything to do with the man who was shot.

Albuquerque police are reporting that one person has died as a result of the officer-involved shooting that took place on Madison NE around 4 a.m. today, APD spokeswoman Trish Hoffman said in an emailed news release.

APD Chief Ray Schultz is expected to release a statement shortly, Hoffman said.

There are very few details available yet, but police are reporting an officer-involved shooting that took place near Menaul and San Mateo around 4 a.m. today, KOB-TV is reporting.
