Solano’s Attorney Says Ex-Sheriff Plans To Enter Plea

An attorney for former Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano says he will plead to charges stemming from the embezzlement of county property.

Attorney Brooke Gamble told The Associated Press Solano’s intent from the start of the investigation was to enter a plea rather than go to trial.

Solano resigned Nov. 24, and released a letter in which he said he’d been selling old sheriff’s department equipment. State Police say they found evidence Solano sold new equipment as well.

He was arrested in January on 251 counts of embezzlement and one of fraud.

The New Mexican reports Clovis-based District Attorney Matt Chandler told a pretrial hearing Monday that no plea can be offered until his office reviews an independent audit of the department. He said he expects the audit soon.
