Verizon Wireless customers target of credit scam

The Better Business Bureau is warning Verizon Wireless customers to disregard robocalls claiming that they are eligible for a credit.

VERIZON WIRELESS 2 11-15-13The national BBB issued a “Scam Alert!” Friday in response to reports that Verizon customers were being targeted in a “phishing scam” intended to steal personal information, thereby putting themselves at risk for identity theft.

Under this scam, customers are being told to visit a phony Verizon website to claim their credit by entering their account username, password and credit card information.

The BBB said one way to tell it’s a scam is the website’s URL address reflects the amount of the purported credit, i.e., for a bogus $123 credit.

Verizon Wireless customers are cautioned to be on their guard against fake websites, to consider whether the company normally contacts them by robocall and, if in doubt, to contact the company directly before divulging any personal information.
