ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque Police Department officer who shot at Robert Garcia, 64, was identified Monday as Peter Romero, an 18-year veteran of the force.
Police said Garcia threatened Romero with a weapon during a DWI stop early Friday on Montgomery NE but have not said if he pointed or fired the weapon before Romero fired. But cellphone video, taken from a man in a nearby apartment and released by KRQE-TV, appears to show that the officer asked the man to put his gun down several times before shooting.
Garcia has no criminal history, according to court records.
University of New Mexico Hospital officials could not release any information on Garcia, and couldn’t even confirm if he was still in the hospital, but police said Garcia would be booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center as soon as he is released.
Romero was sued in August by Brandy Rodke, who claimed the officer hit her several times during a DWI stop.
