Spend (and share) at Yelp’s Nob Hill shopping event

NObHilALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — There’s yet another way to experience the Nob Hill shopping district this holiday season: the Yelp Shops Local Crawl.

Organized by Yelp’s Howie Kaibel,  community manager for the popular review website, the event encourages shoppers to visit participating merchants around Nob Hill on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and then reconvene as a group to share and discuss what they found.

“I’ve just recently found so many cool businesses that I had no idea even existed, and I really wanted to make sure other people knew as well,” Kaibel said.

More than 30 businesses already have signed up to participate, and they are all small, nonfranchised operations.

Participating businesses have been asked to stay open until at least 8 p.m. Dec. 10 and to offer visitors some kind of “unique experience,” Kaibel said, whether it’s a food sample, one-night-only discount or tutorial.

The event is independent of the annual Nob Hill Holiday Shop & Stroll, which will take place from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

“That’s a fantastic event. I love Nob Hill Main Street (the organizer), and I’m glad they do it,” Kaibel said. “I just wanted to do something more intimate, maybe a more adult theme, and allow the businesses to show off a bit.”

The Yelp Shops Local Crawl is set to begin with a group meet-up at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Stranger Factory, 109 Carlisle NE. Attendees will get a shopping bag and a list of participating establishments, then set out on two hours of shopping. They’re encouraged to meet back at one of the participating restaurants at 8 p.m.

“We’ll have a beer and share what we’ve bought,” Kaibel said.

The event is free and open to the public. Yelp is asking people to RSVP online here.

Participants also are encouraged to bring a donation for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico.
