ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — You could call it a case of beginner’s luck.
Albuquerque native Nick Roybal entered the 2010 Fitness New Mexico competition for experience and ended up walking out the male model champion.
For this year’s competition, Roybal knows he’s the one to beat.
“I was in good shape last year,” he said during a recent interview. “I feel like I’m in better shape this time around.”
Roybal and more than 100 other competitors will show off their hard work at the 2011 Fitness New Mexico Championships on Saturday, May 21.
The regional show is a national qualifier for the Fitness Universe Pageant, Fitness America Pageant and Musclemania World Tour.
Cristin Kiburz, the event’s promoter, said more than 1,000 people attended the show and had 65 competitors in the inaugural event.
“In 2011, we are expecting to have over 120 competitors with more than 2,000 in audience attendance,” she said.
Roybal said he’s looking forward to defending his title, but it’s the community outreach he’s done that has made for a great year. After winning the event, Roybal has been the guest speaker at various schools to encourage children to eat right.
“I like being able to inspire others to get up and get fit,” he said. “You don’t have to be a bodybuilder. I want people to know how to treat their body properly.”
Roybal said he was always interested in sports in high school. After graduating he pursued modeling and acting, but soon after fitness took over.
“There’s a lot of hard work that goes into these competitions,” he said. “All of us are very conscious about the importance of staying healthy and fit.”
Although Roybal spends the majority of the year watching what he eats, he does have a preperformance tradition he eats New York cheesecake pancakes and Sour Patch Kids the day before the event.
He said after eight to 12 weeks of staying on a strict diet, he lets himself splurge.
“All the sugar in the food allows for the skin to tighten and makes me look better,” he said. “It’s a trick that I use.”
