Novelist, poet give writers helping hand

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Aspiring authors can get guidance at a free, no-stress Writer’s Workshop from 3-5 p.m. Dec. 15 at Congregation Albert’s Rabbi David D. Shor Library, 3800 Louisiana NE. Novelist Lois Ruby and poet Paula Schwartz will guide participants from beginners to pros through fun and useful exercises to make words come alive on paper.

POETRY SERIES: The Poetry at the Range Series begins from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11 with a reading from The Malpais Review at the Range Cafe in Bernalillo. It is a new monthly poetry reading series hosted by poet Bill Nevins. The first gathering will feature poets published in The Malpais Review, a nationally known literary quarterly published in Placitas by Professor Gary Brower. The event is free and open to the public.

AT TITLE WAVE: Author Lucy Moore will read from both of her books, “Into the Canyon: Seven Years in Navajo Country” and “Common Ground on Hostile Turf: Stories from an Environmental Mediator,” from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13 at Title Wave Books, 2318 Wisconsin NE.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS: LPD Press/Rio Grande Books of Los Ranchos has released hard-back editions of three award-winning children’s books for the holidays. All are New Mexico-themed books with New Mexico authors and illustrators.

“Shoes for the Santo Niño” was written by the late Peggy Pond Church and illustrated by santero Charlie Carrillo of Santa Fe. “The Tale of the Pronghorned Cantaloupe” was written by Albuquerque author Sabra Brown Steinsiek and illustrated by Albuquerque artist Noel Chilton. “Los Chilitos” is a book by author Viola Peña and illustrator Jerry Montoya, both of Grants.

AUTHORS SPEAK: Valerie Plame and Sarah Lovett , authors of the spy thriller “Blowback,” will be guest speakers at the Mesa Public Library Authors Speak Series at 2 today. The event will be held in the Pajarito Room of Fuller Lodge, 2132 Central Ave., Los Alamos.

READING, SIGNING: Local author Sabra Brown Steinsiek reads from and signs her children’s book “The Tale of the Pronghorned Cantaloupe” from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 at Treasure House Books & Gifts, 2012 South Plaza NW in Old Town. The book was illustrated by Noel Chilton.

OPEN POETRY MIC: Page One Bookstore will host a Poetry Open Mic Night at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10. The featured poet for December is Joanne Bodin. Kenneth P. Gurney will host. Thirty minutes of open mic will be followed by a poetry reading by the featured poet. Sign-up for the open mic session begins at 6:45 p.m. Page One is at 11018 Montgomery NE.

AT BOOKWORKS: Peter Maguire will sign his book “Thai Stick” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande NW. It documents the findings of historians Maguire and Mike Ritter as they explore the underground smuggling operations of Bangkok, Thailand.
