ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Gov. Susana Martinez says it was unacceptable for a state police officer in Taos to shoot his gun at a vehicle that had children in it, and it was the right decision to fire him.
Martinez said today the firing of officer Elias Montoya occurred after an internal affairs investigation, and she supported State Police Chief Pete Kassetas’s decision to terminate him.
In an incident on Oct. 28 that was captured on video, Montoya fired at the rear of a van in an effort to immobilize the vehicle. That was after a chaotic traffic stop during which the driver — the mother of the five children in the van — was uncooperative and drove away from officers.
Martinez said it was unacceptable for Montoya to fire his weapon at the van in an effort to stop it.
