PNM cautions businesses telephone scam is back

New Mexico businesses are once again being warned by PNM not to fall victim to a persistent telephone scam.

PNM 12-16-13As was the case several months ago, scam artists posing as PNM representatives are calling restaurants and other businesses — often during the busy lunch hour — and threatening to shut off their power if they don’t immediately agree to make a payment with a prepaid debit card.

PNM is advising businesses to hang up if they receive one of these calls, then call PNM directly at 888-DIAL PNM (888-342-5766). A customer service representative will be able to determine if the call is legitimate and if the account is really past due.

The utility is also reminding customers that it does not ask for payment through a prepaid gift card or a PayPal account.

The New Mexico Restaurant Association and the Greater Albuquerque Innkeepers Association are also notifying their  members to be aware of this scam, following reports that a hotel executive was told his power would be shut off if he did not wire $2,000 within one hour of the phone call.

For more information about this scam, read this notice on the PNM website.
