ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The county clerk and deputy clerk of Roosevelt County resigned from their positions Friday in protest of the New Mexico Supreme Court decision yesterday that legalized same-sex marriage statewide, Roosevelt county commissioners confirmed.
Clerk Donna Carpenter and Deputy Clerk Janet Collins announced their resignations early Friday morning because they refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, Commissioner Jake Lopez said.
Neither Carpenter nor Collins could immediately be reached for comment.
“She said she would rather resign because she wasn’t going to provide any licenses to people who marry like that,” said Lopez, a Democrat.
Roosevelt County commissioners have scheduled an emergency meeting Monday to appoint a new county clerk.
“The county is going along with whatever the Supreme Court decides,” Lopez said. “It isn’t our thing, it’s their doing, so we have to abide by the law.”
