Roosevelt County appoints new clerk

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Roosevelt County Commission on Monday filled the county clerk position that was vacated last week in protest of New Mexico becoming the 17th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriages, the Portales News-Tribune reported.

During an emergency meeting on Monday, commissioners expressed disappointment with the New Mexico Supreme Court ruling but said if they didn’t appoint a new clerk the Governor’s Office might do it for them, the News-Tribune said.

The commission appointed DeAun Searl, 43, who has been with the clerk’s office a little more than five years, to serve as county clerk, the paper reported.

Searl promised to do her job to the full extent of the law, regardless of her personal beliefs, according to the News-Tribune.

She replaces former County Clerk Donna Carpenter, who resigned last Friday to protest the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage decision, the News-Tribune said. Deputy Clerk Janet Collins also resigned for similar reasons.
