ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — With the storm track stalled somewhere to our north, we ring in the New Year with an ugly January forecast map from the Climate Prediction Center:
It’s important to be careful about this map’s meaning. That ugly brown is not a prediction of dry weather, but rather a forecast that the odds tip toward dry weather during the time period. So the chances of a dry January go up, and the chances of a wet one go down. Meaning it still can be wet. But with 75 percent of the state in drought, New Mexicans need to beat these odds in order to dig ourselves out of the parched conditions left by three very years.
