Rio Rancho shooting death blamed on “mishandling of a firearm”

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 20-year-old man is being held in the Sandoval County jail on a second degree murder charge after Rio Rancho police said he shot a man in the head, killing him, according to Rio Rancho police.

Police were called to a shooting on the 1600 block of Evelyn Drive NE around 10:40 p.m., New Year’s Eve, where they found 22-year-old Carlos Rueda of Rio Rancho with a head wound, according to an RRPD news release. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

An RRPD spokeswoman said the shooting appears to have been the result from the “mishandling of a firearm,” and  she called it a “negligent accidental death”.

Ryan Wathen, 20, was arrested and booked into the Sandoval County Detention Center.
