ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sheriff Dan Houston Wants $2.25 Million for A-Star Chopper
For sale: One helicopter from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
The pricetag: $2.25 million.
Sheriff Dan Houston told reporters on Tuesday that he simply can’t afford to keep both his department’s helicopters in the air.
And besides, BCSO is in desperate need of an upgrade to its fleet of patrol cars, Houston said.
So he’s putting the department’s A-Star AS350 chopper, which was purchased in 2008 for $3.2 million, on the auction block.
The A-Star has been grounded, the sheriff said, while officials work out the details of selling it. BCSO’s Huey helicopter will remain in use.
If the A-Star sells, $1 million of the proceeds will go toward 40 new patrol cars, Houston said. Depending on how much is left over, he may consider purchasing a different helicopter or a fixed-wing aircraft.
