Democrat who voted with GOP claims bullying by fellow Dems

JEFF: Voted with Republicans on budget bill

JEFF: Voted with Republicans on budget bill

Rep. Sandra Jeff’s vote last week against a Democratic-backed budget bill put her in familiar territory.

Jeff, a Crownpoint Democrat, also bucked party lines by casting a “no” vote on the budget during the 2011 legislative session.

And her Monday comments on the House floor – alleging she has been threatened and bullied by members of her own party since last week’s vote – bore a strong resemblance to similar comments she made three years ago.

Jeff has also sided with House Republicans on several other key votes in recent years, but she insisted Monday that her party affiliation is strong.

“I will always be a Democrat,” she said.

While Jeff has insisted she is following her conscience, some Roundhouse insiders have questioned whether she might be receiving certain concessions in exchange for her votes.

The $6.2 billion budget bill stalled on the House floor Friday on a 34-34 vote, with Jeff joining the House’s 33 GOP members in opposing the measure.

HOOPS WIN: The Senate is back on top in one of the Roundhouse’s most heated rivalries – the one decided on the basketball court.

One year after being defeated by the House of Representatives, senators reclaimed bragging rights Friday by posting a 26-24 win.

The charity contest helped raise $21,800 for research and treatment at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center, the beneficiary of the annual “Hoops 4 Hope” game.

House members lamented their loss Monday, blaming missed free throws and questionable refereeing for their defeat.

No injuries were immediately apparent, save for a few possible bruised egos.
