Senate OKs looser rules on PE credits

Legislation to allow school districts to decide what activities can substitute for a physical education credit passed the Senate on Monday on a unanimous vote.

School districts previously had the freedom to give students a PE credit, which is required for graduation, if they participated in certain activities or classes, but the Public Education Department announced last fall that it would no longer allow that.

The PED exempted this year’s seniors and some juniors, but the change upset some school districts and parents.

Under Senate Bill 122, participation in marching band or the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, for example, would fulfill the physical education requirement.
