Expo NM general manager appears before Senate Rules Committee

The general manager of Expo New Mexico appeared today at a meeting of the Senate Rules Committee, averting a possible move to have lawmakers subpoena him.

Dan Mourning answered questions from committee members who have been looking into the operations of the state fair, the role of the State Fair Commission, and the renewal of the lease for the racino at the fairgrounds.

Mourning, who was appointed by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez,  said Expo New Mexico is in better shape today than it was when he took over in 2011. He said Expo’s revenues outpaced its expenditures for the past couple of years.

He acknowledged that Expo still has a debt of $1.8 million. He said it’s difficult to pay the debt off while keeping the state fair operating at the same time.

Democratic members of the committee were upset that Mourning had not appeared at earlier meetings of the committee this week. Chairwoman Linda Lopez had said she would ask the committee to vote to subpoena him if he did not appear.

Republican committee members complained that the panel is overdoing it with its focus on the fair and the lease for the Downs at Albuquerque.
