ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Channeling something bad into something great is the drive behind I See Stars.
Founding members and brothers singer Devin and drummer Andrew Oliver found the ability to funnel their energies into something amazing and rise above some difficult childhood experiences.
Their childhood memories are particularly documented in the song and video for “Murder Mitten” off their current album “New Demons.”
“It is very personal to me and my brother,” Devin Oliver explained. “We didn’t grow up fortunate. We did not come from a rich family. We come from a broken family. My dad was in a band and it’s a big reason why I chose to play music and when (my parents) split up, everything broke.”
Oliver said the “Murder Mitten” video also is sentimental.
“The meaning is to turn something bad and tragic into something great,” Oliver explained. “We channeled all of our energy emotionally and mentally from our parents breaking up into this band, into something greater than I thought it would be.”
Reviews have been favorable and audiences have embraced “New Demons.”
Oliver said he has a personal attachment to the songs on the album.
Evidently, fans have also developed a strong connection with the music and are singing it along so loud that Oliver said he cannot hear himself at shows. This welcome reaction motivated the band to change-up its set list.
