Navajo gambling compact introduced

A resolution that lawmakers approve a proposed gambling compact between the state and the Navajo Nation was introduced in the state House on Monday and could be put to a vote as early as today.

A legislative committee has recommended approval of the compact, which would replace an existing agreement that expires next year and would authorize the tribe to have as many as five casinos.

The compact is opposed by some other gambling tribes that don’t want the additional competition and are concerned the compact could become a template for their own negotiations with Gov. Susana Martinez’s office. Under state law, the compact approval resolution doesn’t go through the committee process, and lawmakers can’t change it. Instead, the whole House would debate and vote on it; if it passed, it would go to the Senate.
